I’m sure you have heard that something like only 7% of communication is actually the words themselves. I have seen the figure flip about depending on the source but usually body language and tonality make up the lions share at around 90%. I’m not completely convinced that it is that high myself but I’m onboard with the general principle and I see it demonstrated time and time again.
One of the main reasons why I am quitting doing life coaching over the phone is because I like to have visual feedback. I explained my reasons in more detail here and I must stress that I have no issue with any life coach that does their work over the telephone, it’s purely a personal decision by me.
Yesterday I had two comments about my blog, one at the Steve Pavlina forum and one here. By the way, if you are a newbie I never publish comments although I often reply personally if somebody makes an interesting observation, so please do respond if you have a particular urge to do so. One of the comments I had was that the title was tasteless and the other that my philosophy of blaming the world didn’t sound like a good one.
If you read here regularly you will know that I am very tongue in cheek. In fact I once had to have it surgically removed so embedded had it become. Most of my posts have a serious edge but I want to have fun writing them. I want to smile or even laugh when I am writing (and sad though it may seem to some, I do – a lot!) I also like to think that people have the same reaction reading them.
In my very humble opinion there are too many people working in the self-development industry that take themselves very seriously. When I say self-development, I mean all aspects of the field including Life Coaches, Counselors, Therapists, Authors and some of the self-proclaimed kings of personal development that I’ll not mention, and no I don’t mean Tony Robbins because I like Tony Robbins.
This shouldn’t be taken too seriously; it’s only life we’re talking about not something important like war you know! (That was a joke btw so step away from the comments button). Not only that, but when you can get somebody to laugh and feel good you are far more likely to get a point home and for it to be remembered.
When you read an e-mail or post and it offends you stop and ask yourself this question before you respond:
What else could this mean?
I wasn’t blaming the world in yesterdays post, I was joking. It was a dig at people that do blame the world for their problems. As for the post name, it was meant to be ironic and it was taken from the title of a track by Beck that was a big seller for me in the days when I had my record store.
