I am going to take issue with a hero of mine, Seth Godin today. I remember reading that Seth was very enamored with Apples shops and their ‘Genius Bar’ in particular and I am not.
Like a good number of people I have toyed with buying a Mac and always pulled back at the last moment simply because of the steep learning curve and the money I have invested in software that probably wouldn’t run on a Mac. I do however have an Ipod and in fact I am on my fourth, an 8Ghz Nano. I love these things like you can’t imagine. The Ipod alone is responsible for getting me into the gym 4 times per week because I now no longer get bored and in fact look forward to some time to myself to either listen to music or audio books. I also use it for guided trances and meditation in one form or another so it is truly integrated into my life.
My latest Ipod has been ‘acting up’ it keeps locking on me and the fast forward keeps sticking. So I took it to the Apple store last week to get it looked at. On getting to the counter I explained my problem and was told that I needed to speak to a ‘Genius’ and that there were no more available today. But I have driven 15 miles and this product is faulty I whined, can’t you do something? Sorry dude I’m not a ‘Genius’. No kidding I thought. He then went on to explain that they had so many returns that they had to make appointments otherwise they wouldn’t be able to deal with everybody! Wow, that was some confession.
I was dejected and disappointed but at least I wasn’t Ipodless as I still had my old Mini to fall back on. I was thinking about buying a 30Ghz version so I could record personal coaching sessions and watch some old NLP stuff when I have free time away from the office. Do you think I will buy one now? You bethca! Apple has me by the nether regions and I’m not ashamed to admit it but it doesn’t stop me from being disappointed in their level of customer service.
