I was talking to my website developer the other day about making some changes to my site based around offering hypnotherapy training and a one-day meditation course. We have an excellent working relationship and speak once or twice a week to discuss how things are going. This was a normal conversation and as we were wrapping up I asked him how his month had gone. I heard a sharp intake of breath and a phew sound as he let it out again.’
‘Well, I guess I got lucky because I managed to close a big deal that took some of the pressure of and allowed me to hit my monthly target’ he responded.
Got lucky? I repeated ‘Yeh’ he said.
‘That’s funny’ I went on ‘because I don’t see that as luck. I am guessing you took the time to ask them what they wanted from their website, what was important to them with their business and what their medium and long term goals were. You probably also asked whether they needed a scaleable website, what volume and type of traffic they needed and what results would make them delighted that they chose On Target.
I assume because I know that you normally do this, that you then followed up with a proposal that met all their needs and was within their budget. I will also take a guess that you asked them to speak to people that have already used your services and are delighted and followed up with a call to clear up any queries? Is that pretty much how it happened?’
‘Yeh, more or less’ he responded. ‘There was a bit more to it than that, but that is the gist’
Then it is not luck, it is a job well done and an order well deserved.
If I have a client that tells me that they have made huge improvements in their life since they hired me as a Life Coach, I don’t think “Wow, that’s lucky, let’s hope they don’t realize it’s juts a coincidence’ It wouldn’t serve me or them to hold onto that belief because if I did I would never know when I was actually doing something right.
None of this is to suggest we should be blasé and/or arrogant about our success, far from it, but we should be able to acknowledge to ourselves when we have done a good job. There will always be the occasional screw up and lost opportunity that can be analyzed to death to see where we can improve but let’s give ourselves credit when we get it right, it’s the least we deserve.
