Tomorrow Never Comes, So Enjoy Today

I’d like to continue with my steal beam obsession from yesterday and ask you once again if you are happy to trot along my pretend beam for $50. It’s stil sat in the parking lot and to be honest it’s getting in the way but we can leave it be for the time being. I’m going to believe that you are up for the challenge and will soon be the owner of a shiny new crisp $50 note brave soul that you are. I forget to say that the beam is about 100 feet long but hey, so what, you can do it, right?

Let’s up the ante somewhat and put $100,000 on the line, are you ready to go for it again? Damn straight you are, you da man/woman! (delete where applicable). Oops I forgot to tell you I’ve moved it. Well c’mon, what do you expect for $100,000, a walk in the park or maybe the parking lot?

The beam is now in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s not a nice night at all, in fact it is the kinda of night that makes you wish you were curled up in front of a fire with a loved one, a nice bottle of wine and a tear-jerker of a movie. But you aint there because you’re with me earning some money. Our beloved beam is now stretched between two trawlers. The waves are steady at 25 feet and peaking at over 40. It’s bitterly cold and there is a mixture of sleet and rain that’s almost horizontal in the 50mph wind. The boats are pitching about like toy ducks in a bath and the spray is even hitting the Bridge windshield 20 feet above you. So then, are you ready to earn your money?

Strangely enough when I have asked life coaching clients this question, nobody has ever said, “Ok, let’s do it”. They normally look at me like I have suggested we dress up in seal costumes, bathe in dead fish and then go swimming with Great White Sharks.

I understand that but I bet I can say something that will get you to make that walk. What if I said I had your partner or a parent and they had to do it if you didn’t? If you have kids and presuming you actually like the little devils, would you do it to save them?

Experience tells me that 95% of you reading (that have people close to you) would now do it. The remaining 5% are probably CEO’s of large corporations.

What’s the point of this blog?

It is this. Why is it that so many people would risk their lives or even give their lives up in such extreme circumstance but not be prepared to leave that office at 6.00pm to see the kids before bedtime, or refuse to see a client because it’s their wedding anniversary, or keep putting off that family vacation because there is ’stuff’ to do and anyway they can do it next year, right?

The only answer that I can ever come up with is that people think that there will always be tomorrow for the things that REALLY matter, and today can be used for mundane stuff like making money. The truth is though, that one day there will be no tomorrow to look forward to but by then it is too late to do anything about it.
