The Secret - An Alternative Viewpoint
I got a very interesting e-mail after I blogged about The Secret movie the other day from a Psychotherapist called Thom Rutledge. Tom made some great points that I have to say had crossed my mind from time to time but I had subsequently buried.
I’m going to start by saying that I am glad that The Secret was written. I like it mostly because it has opened up a huge area of debate that would otherwise have been left untouched. It allows me to talk to life coaching clients about subjects that would have been completely taboo 18 months ago. In essence it has made my job easier. When I have clients that are suffering from stress and they announce that they have seen The Secret and believe in the Law of Attraction then it is really easy for me to broach the subject of meditation. Prior to that, for me to say to some busy exec that “you need to take time to sit quietly and chant a mantra for 20 minutes a day” (I do realize that not all meditations use mantras but I am bigging it up for dramatic effect) would get me at best a glazed stare and at worst an excellent look at the beck of his $1,000 suit as he headed out the door. By the way, I say he with purpose. In my experience women are way more open to this kind of thing. Now I wonder why that is?
As well as the debate that The Secret stirs up it leans heavily towards getting people to think positively. When people start to focus on what they do want rather than what they don’t it increases their chance of achieving their aims by the nth degree. Ask anybody that has taken advance driving what is one of the first things that they are taught.
Always keep your focus on where you want to go.
Ever wondered why so many people hit tress in the middle of nowhere? It’s largely because they are focusing on the tree and thinking I mustn’t hit THAT! Bang, oops.
There is some great stuff in The Secret and then there is some stuff that concerns me. I happen to believe in the Law of Attraction but I certainly don’t understand how it works because it seems to be inconsistent and to claim otherwise is foolish.
About 5 years ago I was stressed senseless and on sleeping tablets for a 2 week period. One night I decided not to take one and lay there wide awake for a couple of hours. Eventually I gave in and went and to grab a tablet. The kind I was on were brilliant and only took about 30 minutes to work, I dropped back into bed and prepared for a night of blissful sleep. I waited knowing that I would be asleep very soon. Then I waited some more. I can still remember the event like it was yesterday because I stayed awake all night and even for me that was rare.
The fact was I had inadvertently picked up the wrong bottle and taken one of my wife’s thyroxin tablets. I didn’t know that. I wanted to sleep and I was absolutely convinced I would sleep but I didn’t. Where was the Law Of Attraction? I had the desire, the belief and the message was well and truly ‘out there’ that I wanted to sleep.
I still believe in The Law Of Attraction I just don’t think we know enough about it or what we are really dealing with and that is my main concern with The Secret. Too much stuff is treated as fact when in reality it is opinion.
I’d still encourage you to watch The Secret if you haven’t but I would also encourage you to take the good stuff out and leave the dogmatic stuff behind.
