The Future Of Life Coaching
I have spent some time recently trying to decide whether I should do further life coaching training here in the US, all of my formal life coach training was undertaken in the UK but I must admit that I would like to see how the American approach differs, if indeed it does.
Currently like the UK, Life, Personal and Business Coaching are not regulated at either State or Federal level. Anybody can set up a business and call themselves a Life Coach with no problems whatsoever. However, Life Coaching is still a fledgling industry and I feel sure this will change sooner or later. To be honest, I hope it does change because I think that anybody that it advising or helping people undertake what can be major life changes should have gone through some process that enables them to understand the repercussions if they do not do their job in a thoughtful and professional manner. Regulation would also give those that are considering hiring a coach some peace of mind knowing that they are dealing with somebody that has some substance behind the nice shiny business card that they just presented.
Having said all that, my dilemma is this. If and when regulation is introduced will it allow people that are qualified overseas to use those qualifications as well as their experience and if not, which US qualification will be recognized? At present the situation is a mess with various different courses and levels of competency being offered and with nobody seeming to know which will be the standard. It’s a little bit like trying to decide whether to buy a Betamax or VHS VCR for those of you old enough to remember that face off in the early 80’s. So I’ll continue to peruse the brochures and ponder and hope that in the meantime the major players decide that they need to work together on at the very least, a voluntary code of conduct that will certainly improve the credibility of the industry in the eyes of the public.
