Great Self-Development & Coaching Books Revisited

I did a Blog some while ago listing some great self-development books and I wanted to revisit that, as it is something that I get asked about on a regular basis. In fact I bet a day never goes by without somebody either asking me about a certain book or asks me to recommend one.

I’m not going to even look at my last list because I change my mind and it’s always in a state of flux depending on my mood. All I will say is that these are all top notch and worthy of anybodies time and money.

Please note that I tend to listen to audio books on my Ipod so some of these may not be available in traditional formats

1. The Maverick Mindset by John Eliot – This is my favorite book/cd of all time. Packed full of great stories and examples of how the super successful thinks differently. Eliot’s style of delivery is enthusiastic and entertaining and his ideas innovative and fascinating. There are also some great examples of people refusing to accept limiting beliefs imposed on them by the outside world. I have listened to this through several times and I still get new stuff out of it

2. The Art of Exceptional Living by Jim Rohn – The Godfather of the self-development industry and still going strong well into his 70’s. This is great pragmatic level headed advice that any sensible person would acknowledge which is probably why it

3. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey – You may well already have this book, as it is probably the single biggest selling self-development/business book ever written. There is a reason for that, it’s brilliant. It’s packed full of great advice to make you more efficient both in life and at work.

4. How To Be A Complete & Utter Failure In Life, Business And Everything by Steve McDermott – I have the live version of this so I’m not sure how the book compares. McDermott is hilarious and his delivery impeccable. He smashes through beliefs that hold us back and peppers his routine with funny stories about real life incidents that have happened to famous people like Muhammed Ali, himself and his kids

5. The Success Principles(TM): How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be by Jack Canfield – From the guy that brought us ‘Chicken Soup For The Soul’ one of the best books in on self-development I have read. Jack Canfield picks up the baton from Jim Rohn and moves the entire field forward in one bound.

6. Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell – I am not sure whether this really qualifies as a self-development or coaching book but I highly recommend it anyway. If you have ever wondered why your gut reactions are more accurate than your carefully thought out ideas, then this book will tell you.

7. Awaken the Giant Within by Tony Robbins – I was unsure which Tony Robbins book to include because he has done so many good ones but this is the one that got me to thinking I might want to be a Life Coach. Great advice and use of NLP (although he doesn’t refer to it as that) to help you break negative thought patterns and self-limiting beliefs. If you buy it on cd get the unabridged version.

8. The Secrets to Manifesting Your Destiny by Wayne Dyer – I really wanted to list about 4 of Wayne Dyers books because they are all great. I chose this because it is an easy way into manifesting for those that simply want to dip a toe into the water first. If you liked the movie The Secret (Extended Edition) you will probably like this.

9. Manifesto The Internal Revolution by The Barefoot Doctor – Now we really are into the esoteric stuff! Stephen Russell aka The Barefoot Doctor gives you the inside scoop on manifesting your dreams in a Taoist way. It’s for the open-minded and uses similar methods to The Secrets of Manifesting Your Destiny. I advise the 3 cd set if you can get hold of it just to listen to his very laid back delivery. Appears to be only available from Amazon.co.uk but worth hunting down elsewhere.

10. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill – No list like this could reasonably leave off this all time classic. Written in the 1920’s it is packed full of great advice and delivered in an easy to understand way. Some of the language is now very dated but don’t let that put you off reading or listening to a book that has changed 1,000’s of lives for the better. I just heard that they have just restored and republished this book with extra information and endnotes to make it more relevant to todays reader. You can buy it here—> Think and Grow Rich!: The Original Version, Restored and Revised

If you are really into improving your life then any of these books would be a great starting point and I feel sure you would have absolutely no regrets on investing the money. There are lots of others that I would have liked to include like The Why Cafe by John P Strelecky, anything by Deepak Chopra, Richard Carlson, Richard Bandler or Brian Tracy but I think I will save some for another time.

If you have something specific that you want to work on and don’t know what would be the best material drop me a line and I will try and help out with some suggestions.
