48 Bucks for 48 Hours
I got an e-mail from somebody this morning saying they had downloaded the first part of How To Be Rich and Happy. I hope the person doesn’t mind me reproducing it here because it will help me to address some concerns you may or may not have about the book.
I write because I downloaded the sample and after reading the first chapter I’m not feeling much Brownson in there. I am an avid follower of your fun, witty and yet absolutely focussed blog, and think ‘Don’t ask stupid questions’ was the best book I could hope to come across at the moment. I was hoping this new book would build on this, but I’m feeling turned off by the way that it is written. Can I expect more of the Brownson coolaid I’ve been slurping down, or is this publication somewhat different? (I’m not familiar with John Strelecky’s work so can’t judge his influence)
Leaving aside that sounds like I have written it myself (I didn’t, honest!) that’s a fairly astute observation, because I didn’t write the first part. I wasn’t living in Chicago twenty years ago, (in fact I’ve never even been to Chicago), but John was.
One of the really tough parts of this project was marrying our styles together. You may not have noticed, but I’ve a tendency to see the absurd in most things and I like nothing better than to poke fun at others, myself and of course, life in general. If life isn’t there to be laughed at, then I for one am missing the point.
My other e-books were heavy on the humor, or rather heavy on what I think is humor. There’s plenty of it in this book, but nothing like as much and there is a reason for that.
When I use humor in my posts, it’s usually to make a point or anchor somebody to a state so they’ll remember what I’ve said. Ok, so that’s the head up my ass NLP theory. The reality is sometimes I’m doing that consciously, sometimes I’m just having fun and writing what makes me laugh, just because I can.
With ‘How To Be Rich and Happy’ there is more of a need to keep people focused and some of the sections are light on humor for that reason, but by no means all.
I think it’s fair to say, we are setting ourselves up for more ridicule than the time I went to ballet classes in a pink tutu by choosing a title like ‘How To Be Rich and Happy’ if we don’t deliver. So we had better make sure the book meets the hype we have created, or ruin our credibility pretty damn quickly. I honestly and not too humbly, think we have done that….and some.
Somebody left a comment on the How To Be Rich and Happy blog saying this:
Of the many self-help books I’ve read, very few offered any novel, concrete, workable steps and rather puffed up the book with filler and platitudes.
I actually agree with that 100%. We have gone to ridiculous lengths to make sure everything we used in the book is relevant. We have stripped out at least 25,000 words of material we thought didn’t add any real value.
The first person that had a go at editing Don’t Ask Stupid Questions (the last day you can get that is today the 21st by the way unless you go to Amazon), gave up in exasperation saying “I can’t do it and retain the Timness’
Well I think there’s plenty of Timness or Brownson in this book, but maybe a smidgen less than in my previous books and on this blog.
The book will be on sale for the 48 hour window as from 12 Noon today (Tuesday 22nd) until the same time on Thursday. As a reader of my blog and by way of saying thanks I want to give you the gift certificate code of ‘RichandHappy’ (without the apostrophes).
Don’t hang around because this will only work for the 48 hour period from 12.00 NOON on the 22nd and then it will expire. The book will show at what will be the retail on full launch on the 5th October of $97, but when you enter ‘RichandHappy’ at checkout it will give you $49 discount.
One thing I said to the guy that e-mailed me is of course we guarantee the book. If you buy it and think it sucks donkey balls, send it back and you can have your money back. Hopefully that wont be the case and you’ll put the exercises and techniques to good use first and see they work.
I hope even if you don’t buy the book that you’ll subscribe to the blog. It is very much work in progress at the moment and we will be adding more material as we move along. I’ll be posting once per week and so will John. John does have a very different style to me, but he is a great writer and knows his stuff when it comes to finance and being independently wealthy.
You can subscribe via RSS here and we should have e-mail subscriptions set up very soon. You can also subscribe to our newsletter, although at this stage I have absolutely no idea what we’ll be putting in that!
