Don’t Turn A Blind Eye To This

I watched the Michale Moore film Sicko (Special Edition) last night. I must say that I am not really a Michael Moore fan. My issue with him is not usually with his message but with the way he has delivered it in the past. He has a tendency to polarize opinion and I don’t think that’s a good thing at all. Therefore, people that don’t like him and don’t like his movies don’t watch them and dismiss them out of hand, whereas people that like what he has to say listen and agree. The result is the same people hear what he is talking about each time and the rest of the population couldn’t give a hoot and he doesn’t really shift opinion that much.

That is such a shame and I wish that somebody that was universally liked (or as close as you will ever get to something like that) had made this movie because it is a must see for everybody.

I don’t like to get too political here because I’m a life coach not a politician, but when it comes to health and education I do have strong views. What can be more basic than for the Government of a wealthy nation making sure that its least well off citizens gets basic medical care as well as a good solid education?

Sicko is a frightening film and a wake up call to millions of people. I’m sure few people actually thought that insurance companies were altruistic, but how many people really appreciated how ruthless they are? They don’t care about the likes of you and me. They don’t care how many lives they ruin or people they bankrupt, or who dies because they get refused medical cover. It’s an outrage that far too many people put up with because hey, that’s how capitalism works right? Well it doesn’t need to. We can encourage people to take responsibility for their own lives and still offer them a helping hand, it’s basic human decency and anybody that tells you differently doesn’t get it.

If you are anti-Moore and you haven’t seen this movie because of that, I’d ask even implore you, to put your dislike of him to one side and rent it. Of course free basic medical care does cost money to the taxpayer but ask yourself this question. “Am I prepared to pay a little more in tax so that I can sleep safe in the knowledge that I will always get good medical care irrespective of my age or financial situation and that medical bills will never bankrupt me or a loved one?”

Is it right and proper that more people declare bankruptcy in the US because of medical bills that any other single reason?
