Life Coaching For Kids - Part 2

Posted on 9 July 2007

So as I said on Saturday I was meditating and from nowhere came an idea for a future venture that just seemed so right for me and fitted in with so many things that I have been thinking about and planning.

I was talking with a client earlier in the week and ruing the fact that we do not teach kids the importance of words and how to communicate properly. I am not talking about basic grammar and how to actually write, but genuine meaningful communication. The ability to listen actively, to understand, to contemplate and to relay our point clearly, congruently and effectively.

About 3 years ago I was in a gym in the UK when a personal trainer asked me if I ever had problems with my knees. I was surprised to say the least because I had been getting knee pain for a year or two and was taking glucosomine for my joints, but I had no idea how he could tell by simply looking at me. We chatted for some while and he suggested I throw the supplements away because my problem was not my knee lubrication it was the way I ran. The trainer enquired as to whether I had even been taught how to run properly. I raised an eyebrow (or I would have done if I could, I really envy people that can raise one eyebrow because mine seem to refuse to move independently, anyway I digress) and said ‘ been taught to run, are you serious?’

To cut a long story short there are indeed proper and improper ways to run. There are techniques that can reduce or intensify stress in certain areas and all sorts of different styles depending on the build etc of the runner. I was amazed, what could be more basic than running, how could I get that wrong? After all I have been doing it almost all my life.

There are some things that come naturally to human beings like running and eating and breathing that most people seldom think about and almost never get shown how to do correctly. So the result is we often develop bad habits like breathing too high in our chest, running on our toes too much and eating too quickly and don’t even realize that we are doing anything wrong because we have never been shown any differently.

I’m typing as I think here and I need to put some more contemplation into this because I have just thought that not only do we not teach kids how to communicate properly but also we don’t even teach them how to THINK properly. Seriously, we don’t, and I’m going to explain what I mean and where I am going with all this later on in the week.
