It’s That Time Of Year Again

Posted on 24 December 2007

Do you often set new years resolutions that you break within weeks or even days of getting past January 1st?

Why do you think so many people do that? I heard once that the figure is over 90% so that means there are a lot of people failing to follow through with promises they have made to themselves each year.

There are a number of things that you can to do stack the deck in your favor. Probably the most effective would be to hire a life coach but if you can’t afford to do that or have some aversion to life coaches and their touchy feely, aint life great attitude, then here’s some tips to keep you on track or off track depending on what your resolution is.

Tell as many people as possible what you are going to do. Be adamant and ask for support because the more people that want you to succeed the easier it will become.

Make a list of everything that you have to gain by keeping with your goal. I do mean everything too, really drill down past the obvious and get as many reasons as possible. Ask friends and family members to help out. Promise to read the list twice a day, first thing in the morning and last thing at night.

Make a list of everything you have to lose if you fail with mission. Again, look past the obvious and come up with as many reasons as possible. Vow to read the list every morning.

Visualize your new behavior every morning and evening. See yourself being successful and managing with ease what it is you want to do. This is incredibly powerful, and a technique used by a great many super successful people.

Drop the words like trying and attempting. Don’t say you are trying to quit smoking, say you have quit smoking. This is really important. By using the word ‘try’ you are accepting that you may fail and the reality is that you haven’t fully committed to it. Commit! Tell yourself that this is a done deal and you are a non-smoker, or an ex-drug addict or that you no longer have a compulsion to watch reality tv.

Lastly, give yourself a break. If you slide back once use that as a reason to push on and not one to cave in quicker than a Presidential campaigner caught tapping his foot vigorously in a public bathroom. Learn from the mistake you made so that you don’t make it again, recommit and move on.
