Holistic Life Coaching

Posted on 4 October 2007

When I talk about taking an holistic approach to life coaching I occasionally get knowing looks at though I am about to break out my sandals, light up a pipe and start to dance naked round a fire wearing a badger for a hat. Well it’s not quite like that, in fact, it’s not like that at all. Not these days anyway.

We are all holistic beings, that is a fact pure and simple. Everything we do has some impact on something else and that impacts on something else and so on and so forth. It is more or less impossible to be thoroughly miserable at work and be as happy as a pig in the wet stuff at home. Similarly, I have never worked with anybody that has a marriage breaking down and still been bouncing into work each morning grinning like Jim Carey on acid. It’s not just our work and home life either, there is the knock on into our social life, sleep patterns and on our health both mental and physical. No man is an island and no part of a man is an island. In fact no island is an island either but that’s another story.

When I use the word holistic in a coaching sense it just means that I will be looking at the whole person and their whole life (within reason). When I say life there I do mean current life I spend little time delving around in somebody’s past.

I know that when I first approached a life coach it was to deal with stress management issues and nothing else. The reality was when I started to delve deeper that the stress was just a symptom and not the cause. The cause for me was being in a job that I hated but rather surprisingly, didn’t like to admit to myself that I hated.

So what is the moral of this post? I have absolutely no idea other than to say if somebody talks to you and uses the word holistic get curious not dismissive. It simply means that they are wanting to look at the whole, the big picture and not that they are a beard growing hippy  that burns flags, eats tofu and hugs dolphins in their spare time.
