Golf As A Metaphor For Life

I had a great e-mail from a life coaching client yesterday. As clients go Jason is a pleasure to work with and he’s always really pumped up for our sessions (as to be fair are most of my clients, god bless ‘em all) and eager to look at new options and ideas.

I don’t normally Blog about client e-mails but this one tied in beautifully with a post I did on 1st October called ‘Effective Communication’ so I asked his permission to use it here today.

The reason I like it so much is that it talks about golf as being a metaphor for life and I thought it hit the mark on several different levels. Jason gave me the ok to play about and alter it, but I think it deserves to be left alone (apart from a paragraph break) because it’s probably better than anything I could do anyway. I hope you enjoy it.

“I played in a golf event on Sunday and yesterday in a 36 hole marathon and had some fun with a new experience… I was speaking with my close pal John this am, and he got me thinking that golf has some good metaphors/lessons for life….

Your outcomes are dependent on your actions and decisions and you have to take sole responsibility for them, there is no one else to blame like in other sports where you may be against someone or interdependent on some one. Your mental attitude before each shot can also impact your outcome, and your attitude after each poor shot then affects the potential outcome of the next. Not beating oneself up and protecting ones psychology is imperative! Also after a long wayward drive with the ball off the fairway, you can perceive project and worry that you are in bad shape, and often when you arrive at the ball you see it differently, as often you are in better shape than you realized therefore ones reality is not always reality in actuality. At the end of the day it’s definitely better to focus on the few great shots and how you felt after hitting them than remembering the many that were not so great to see.”
