Don’t Tell Me You Don’t Have The Will Power
Sometimes I get people come to me for life coaching based around one issue such as losing weight, quitting smoking or getting fit. They are not the easiest people to deal with because if we hit temporary roadblocks it helps to have other things to work on and obviously that is not possible.
The one thing that I hear time and time again from clients who have previously ‘failed’ in their attempts is that they think they lack will power.
Personally, I don’t even think will power exists, I think it is something dreamt up by people that need to explain why some push through and attain goals whereas others quit.
What I really think people mean is that they lack the motivation to succeed and that is a whole different ball game. If you are not motivated to achieve a task then in all probability you wont achieve it. If you were a 45 year old, married with 2 lovely kids but you’re a heavy smoker and overweight and you suddenly have a non-fatal heart attack, then trust me, you’ll almost certainly quit smoking and start eating more healthily. It would have been easy to say prior to getting that timely kick up the butt, that you were weak willed and many would have taken pleasure in doing so. In reality though, you had the will power all the time but lacked the motivation required to tap into it.
That is pretty much the same for all of us, if we are capable of doing something but don’t, it‘s because there is insufficient motivation. If you can tap into what really motivates you in life then you can tap into something that can help you kick the belief that you have no will power to the curb once and for all and that is half the battle.
