Do You Need A Life Coach?
Somebody asked me the other day whether I thought they needed a life coach. Well I guess that is like me asking the barperson whether I should have a beer or the car salesperson whether I need a new car; I pretty much know what they are going to say. To me life coaching is a no-brainer for 90% of people, because even people that have things fairly well boxed off could usually make a few improvements that would be the cream on the cake.
I guess what the person was really getting at was how badly did I think they needed life coaching. I can’t really comment on that without sounding like I am criticizing somebody, so I don’t, I have to allow the client to make up his or her own mind. Most people know if things are great or there is room for improvement.
When I take on a new client I send out a form called a client intake. I know, I know, the name is stunning in its originality but what can I say, I’m an underrated creative genius. On the form I list about 20 areas and ask the person to gauge where they feel they are on a scale from 1 – 10 with 10 being things couldn’t be better. I do this for a couple of reasons; it gets the client to think about areas of their life that maybe they’d hitherto (I love that word, I don’t think I have ever used it in a post before – what a crying shame!) ignored. That allows me to get a more holistic picture and gives me an idea of what areas need working on. It also acts as a benchmark to refer back to so that measurable improvements can be seen when the clients start to score higher. Any score I get under 7 is something that I think we need to work on.
If you are not sure whether you need or could benefit from hiring a personal coach scan the topics below and mark yourself out of 10 as to how happy you are with each area. If you have some 5’s and below, a life coach can almost certainly help you make significant improvements but if all your scores are 7’s and above then it would be a case of small incremental changes rather than quantum leaps. If you only score 10’s then thank you for reading Your Royal Highness The Dalai Lama it has been a pleasure to have you pop by.

Be honest with the results and if they are lower than you would like, start investigating what you can do to ensure that you start living the life you deserve and stop putting up with second best, there really is no need.
