Actually Staples That Isn’t Easy - But You Already Know That, Right?

I needed to get some office supplies and also some labels for shipping my book this morning and as there is a Staples very close to my gym I called in there. I’m not the greatest at making small decisions in fact I can ponder a restaurant menu to the point where people with me are chewing on mints and wondering what 15% of $135.46 is, so it wasn’t a flying visit.

On the one hand was a label that was the right width for my needs but not quite high enough, and then there was one that was the right width but a bit too high. What to do, what to do. The swinger turned out to be that the smaller label had a $3 rebate and seeing, as I was unsure anyway, why not just save $3? I looked to see if it was one of those ridiculous mail in rebates but it didn’t say anything and I was in a hurry to move on and waste more time picking some pens so I grabbed a pack.

Two hours later and I have my pens and I am checking out. I’d forgotten about my rebate until the cashier handed me my receipt and said with a big smile “Oh my word look at you, you lucky devil you, you’ve saved big time today. Are you Irish by any chance? Or are you wearing a rabbit’s foot wrapped in lucky heather? Either way, it’s party time because you have saved a whopping $3” They may not have been her exact words but it was something like that and I groaned as she handed me a 37 foot long receipt/ rebate redemption form.

To get my $3 I now have to either log on and fill in a form online or fill out the paper form and mail it in. I then wait until after Christmas (the last one I did took almost 3 months but that was for $25) when they send me a check for $3. I then have to drive to my bank to deposit or cash it and finally I have my money back. The money by the way that I foolishly presumed I would have deducted at the checkout.

Is this a scam? Do they know that most people won’t be bothered to jump through all the hoops for 3 bucks? I know what I think.

This is what will happen with me though. I spend many hundreds of $’s a year on stationery and other such office paraphernalia and from now on Staples aint getting a penny of it. Not only that, but I will log on, I will claim my many and I will cash the check.
