If You Build It, They Wont Come!
Although about 80% of my work is business or personal coaching I sometimes find myself doing consultancy work. This often involves helping small start up businesses with their sales and marketing operation and ensuring that they not only attract enough business but the right kind of business.
The one thing that seems to come up time and time again is the thorny issue of websites. Many people think that having a website is enough and that people will flock to it and be falling over themselves to give you lots of money for your products and services. Unfortunately, the real world is not like that. People have to be able to find your site and with in excess of 5 billion (yep that is 5,000,000,000) sites out there you need to do a bit more than be there now. You need to get it optimized so that search engines not only find it but like it so much they keep coming back to check up on it. This helps form your organic ranking and that is the key to all of it. Search engine optimization or SEO as it is usually referred to is a specialist business and requires a great deal of knowledge and skill to do well. It is no good expecting your 14-year-old brothers best friend to do it and expect anything other than dismal results.
Last June it was almost impossible to find my site even by entering the company name. Then I did a Google search for SEO’s and found On Target Web Solutions here in Orlando. Tip: If you cannot find the company that you are using by searching for them online in your area, how good can they be? If they can’t get themselves up there, how on earth can they claim to be able to help you?) In the meantime I have gone from nowhere to being highly placed under every term that really matters to me. It wasn’t overnight, it wasn’t free but it has been well worthwhile.
If your website is valuable to you (which it should be) do what you need to do so that other people can see why it is important to you. Otherwise, it is akin to opening a store and not telling anybody where it is.
Of course you could avoid all this by spending thousands of dollars on pay per click like some companies appear to be doing but I’m not really sure why you would want to do that.
