Business Is Changing - Are You?

My mind seems to have been distracted these last few days when I have not been with clients away from Life Coaching and spending more time thinking about business as a whole. I guess that as this Blog is a representation of me and what I do, it’s best to let that flow rather than restrict what I write about simply because I am a coach and this is a Blog about coaching. Well that is not technically true, I suppose my sub-header does say, ‘A Coach’s View Of Life’ so that gives me some ‘artistic freedom’ to ramble on about ‘stuff’

I know I have talked before about spammers killing the Internet and although I don’t really believe that per se, I do believe that they are helping change it radically. I publish no responses to any of my posts because I simply cannot be bothered to check them on a daily basis. This may sound uncaring and lazy but it is not unusually for me to log in and see in excess of 100 spam messages sat there. So I bulk delete and move on. Occasionally when I have seen genuine replies I have responded personally if it warranted it.

So what has this got to do with the Internet changing and business? Well I suppose it is a follow on from previous posts this week and posts about junk mail and telemarketing that I have made in the past.

We are bombarding our potential customers with so much information that they can no longer deal with it efficiently and it is getting harder and harder for them to sift the useful from the useless, so they bulk delete.

The proliferation of spam and junk has meant that as individuals we are getting more and more comfortable with simply ignoring it all and consigning it to the recycle bin of life. So it becomes the more, the more. The more business hits them the more they delete, the more they delete the more business hits them, it’s relentless.

Sooner or later something has to give.

I had a conversation with the other day with the guy that does such a brilliant job on my SEO (www.ontargetwebsolutions.com) and we were talking about this. He thinks that Google could possibly be a victim. At first I was incredulous but what he said made perfect sense. Google is not as effective as it was 2 years ago, it does throw up more irrelevant results than I ever remembered it doing and let’s not forget that it was born out of being relevant.

That is the key word, relevant. That is the key word to ALL of this. I get 20 spam e-mails a day and none are relevant, I get 10 pieces of junk mail a day and I’m lucky if 1 is relevant, I get an average of 50 responses a day to this Blog and at least 48 or more will be irrelevant, I get 4 or 5 telemarketing calls a week and they are nearly always irrelevant. So I switch off mentally and when I do get something that would benefit me I don’t see it because I am not expecting it or even looking for it.

I don’t for one moment think that we will see Google disappear from our computer screens in the foreseeable future but I do think it will morph radically if it is to continue its success. Morph into what? I have no idea and if I did I wouldn’t be posting this Blog I would be off to count all my money.
